About us

History

The Practice was founded by Ian McDonald in 1970 and was then known as McDonald’s Veterinary Surgery. It was based only at our Uppingham Road site and dealt with farm animals and horses as well as the companion animals that are now our sole concern.

Michael Hayes joined Mr McDonald in partnership in 1972 and the name was changed to McDonald and Hayes and it continued its involvement with farm animals and horses.

It wasn't until 1984, 4 years after Mr McDonald’s retirement that Mr Hayes established the practice as a 100% small animal surgery.

Mr Hayes opened the Birstall surgery in 1984, and it was 3 years later that John Borrajo joined the practice as an assistant veterinary surgeon. He became a partner of Mr Hayes’s in 1990 and from that time the practice was known as Hayes and Borrajo Veterinary Surgeons. The Oadby clinic was founded by Mr John Henwood in the early 1960s and was purchased as a third surgery in 1996 on Mr Henwood’s retirement.

Mr Hayes retired in May 2005 and at that time the present title was introduced – Borrajo's Veterinary Clinics.

Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Tier Two Practice

We are proud to have been categorised as a Tier Two practice by the RCVS, which reflects a high standard of clinical expertise, as well as the excellent facilities and equipment that are provided within
the clinics.

This compliments our commitment to delivering a personal service in an environment that is friendly and genuinely concerned for the welfare of your
pet. Also we recognise the importance of each client and their pet developing a good relationship with their vet and the nursing staff, and to this end we strive to maintain the same personnel at each surgery.

Pet Charities

We are proud to have strong links with the local branch of the RSPCA, The Cats Protection League and Leicester Animal Rescue.

Currently a lot of the routine neutering for the RSPCA, the Cats Protection League and Leicester Animal Rescue is undertaken within Borrajo's Veterinary Clinics as well as treatment for some of their sick or injured pets. On a weekly basis one of our vets visits the RSPCA at Scudamore Road to assess and treat the boarded animals that the staff are concerned about.

Care of the Environment

Borrajo’s Veterinary Clinics recognises that it is wise and sociable to run the practice in as green a fashion as possible.

To this end the following guidelines have been drawn up.

  • Wastage of materials should be kept to a minimum.
  • Rubbish is to be recycled as far as possible.
  • Wastage of fuel should be minimised.
  • When making purchases the environmental impact of these products should be taken into account.
