Jenny's Jottings: Christmas & healthy pets

It’s that time of year again… not long until Christmas! We are all beginning to stock up with good food and presents and it won’t be long before the Christmas tree comes out!

The festive season is an exciting time, but it can also be a hazardous time for our pets. Chocolate is an important example. Although this is a real treat for humans, it can be extremely toxic if consumed by our pets. Chocolate can lead to signs such as vomiting and wobbliness. These signs can progress into seizures and they can be fatal. Depending on the type of chocolate, just a few grams can be very dangerous. So make sure all of the chocolate in your house is out of reach and don't be tempted to feed it as a treat! If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate, contact your vet for advice.

Dogs in particular, can be inclined to eat anything and chew everything! This can cause problems if the item cannot be digested or if it is a shape that could get stuck in the bowel. At Christmas, presents are placed under the tree, tinsel and baubles are hanging tantalisingly in front of an inquisitive pet and turkey bones can be tempting too. If an animal gets something stuck in their bowel they can become very ill over a short period of time. Often they will exhibit persistent vomiting. In many cases, the only way to resolve this problem is to surgically remove the offending item. This poses a risk to the animal and can also be very costly.

Of course, simply too much rich food can cause an animal to have an upset stomach just like it would you or I. It’s not much fun trying to clean up after your pet whilst cooking or entertaining guests!

The festive season should be full of fun. If you are aware of the potential hazards for your pet, you are less likely to have a Christmas that is memorable for all the wrong reasons!
