Jenny's Jottings: Household hazards

Our pets live in an environment containing many different plants and foods. Fortunately, the majority of these are safe for animals, but there are some important and common exceptions.

One of the most common dietary toxins is chocolate. This is often very tempting to pets as well as humans! As a general rule, the darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is, although normal milk chocolate will be dangerous if enough is consumed.

I find that many people know that chocolate can be a hazard, but fewer people are aware of other common foodstuffs that can be dangerous. For example, onions can be toxic to both dogs and cats. Just 20g of onion can cause symptoms in an average sized cat and even powdered onion can cause problems. The symptoms include depression, jaundice and rapid heart rate as a result of red blood cell breakdown.

Grapes and raisins can also be toxic, causing kidney failure in dogs. If your dog has had grapes in the past, do not worry, as severe symptoms start within a few hours of ingestion. However, remember that even if your dog was okay last time, this does not mean he will be next time. Make sure you never allow access to this fruit.

Plants can also be a source of toxins within the home. Certain species of lily can be very harmful and cats are particularly sensitive. All parts of the plant can cause problems if ingested and symptoms include vomiting, signs of kidney failure, disorientation and seizures. Again, onset of signs usually occurs the same day and can be fatal. Be very cautious with this plant!

Another plant that I was surprised to hear could be toxic is the daffodil. Most reported cases involve dogs that have eaten the bulb, as this is the most poisonous part of the plant. Symptoms can be severe so consult your vet if you are worried.

These are common foods and plants but remember that others that can have ill effects too. Never assume that what is safe for you will be safe for your pet.
