Glaucoma in dogs
Glaucoma is a group of diseases that are characterised by an increase in the pressure within the eye. This is a progressive and painful problem and if untreated blindness can result.
The earlier this condition is diagnosed the sooner measures can be taken to control the problem and the better the outlook.
In order to diagnose glaucoma it is necessary to measure the pressure within the eyeball. This is not a difficult procedure from the patient’s point of view and we are now able to carry this out using a tonometer. Neither sedation nor anaesthetic are required in the vast majority of dogs and it can be carried out on an out-patients basis.
Certain breeds do have an hereditary predisposition and we would especially recommend that they have this check carried out annually. They are listed below.
The current fee for this check, including vat is £17.25.
If you would like your dog to have its eyes screened for glaucoma then please phone for an appointment.
